Not so for author Allen Schatz, author of The Marshall Connors series; he uses the world of baseball as a setting for his mystery novels.
Welcome to the blog, Allen! Tell us about your books.
Mystery has always been my favorite genre, so it was an easy decision to go that route for my first formal writing effort. Using baseball as my canvas was a combination of my love of the game and looking for something I thought would be unique. There really aren’t many fiction works set in that world.
What makes baseball work with the thriller genre?
I think it works because the game has an inherent mystery to it. There are many subtle aspects that go unseen by most people. It is a very cerebral game, requiring a lot thought behind the strategy. To me, that morphs nicely into the genre.
Do you have a background in baseball? Do you spend a lot of time researching for your books?
Baseball has always been my game. I have played – not very well – coached, and umpired in my life. I know the game intimately so there wasn’t a lot of research necessary. It was mostly to fill in some of the blanks on how certain things work off the field.
That said, in general, I do spend time researching for my stories. In today’s uber-connected world, it’s very easy to do so. The Internet is a writer’s best friend; you can get anywhere in the world without leaving your chair. That’s a powerful tool.
I agree! Most of my research is done on a laptop - very convenient, but I do find myself chasing rabbits sometimes. Who are some of your favorite writers?
I’d say John Grisham, Harlan Coben, Elmore Leonard are near the top. My style is probably most influenced by those guys.
Those are all good role models for authors working in the thriller genre! Do you have any writing rituals or traditions?
I think the only real ritual is that when I write, that’s all I do. I immerse myself completely into it. It becomes my job, and I try to remove all distractions.
That is good advice! Thank you so much for joining us on the Freelance and Fiction blog, Allen!
