Welcome to the blog, Rebecca! Could you tell us a little bit about your novel?
Formula Rx:17 is a novel that follows the story of Geric, a doctor with a recently revoked license that is recruited by Dalis to work as a private physician. When Geric arrives at the island, Dalis reveals that Geric’s real task will be to force women into submission by altering their memories. Geric agrees to do so to spare his own life and awaits a chance to escape. A young woman named Livia is brought to him for rehabilitation, but is resistant to every method known. Dalis is intrigued by the challenge of breaking her will through his charms rather than by force. The stress of their living conditions results in reckless behavior between Geric and Livia, triggering a deadline to escape before Dalis becomes aware of their transgressions… and cost them their lives.
What led you to write this book?
I read a reader’s post on an online forum where they ranted about love triangles. They had a good point - one of the suitors often has an upper hand. In most cases the other guy never stood a chance. I thought to myself, “What if the reader rooted for the wrong guy the whole time?” When I fell asleep that night a dream answered it for me.
How did you ramp up the suspense while still keeping the characters front and center?
I try to make sure that I keep the story moving forward through the interactions of the characters. At times there are things that you are more inclined to narrate to make it more concise, but most other times dialogue is beneficial to exemplify the tensions building.
Which authors inspire you?
Every author inspires me. From the published author who solved the puzzle of how to get a mainstream hit that grosses millions to the indie author slaving at work all day itching to get back to their writing station. Any person brave enough to wield a pen and call themselves an author inspires me.
What is your best advice on writing?
If it comes to mind, write it down! Even if it’s as simple as a name for a character or a location for the story to take place, you never know when it can be used. Compile the snippets in a sectioned binder or start a generic file on your computer. Everything we write is filled with tons of small details that sometimes escape us when we need them the most. You’ll have a home-made resource guide at your fingertips to jump start your writing gears. At times I’ve gone through notebooks and one small detail has inspired thousands of words.
Thanks so much for stopping by, Rebecca!
