Today’s special guest author is R.K. Finnel! Her sci-fi novel, Kickshaw Candies, is available on Amazon in paperback and on Kindle.
Thank you for stopping by! Could you tell us a little bit about your novel?
Kickshaw Candies is a fantasy based on Irish folklore with a few characters that come straight from my imagination. There is the Siog, the Bringer, and an array of characters that may seem strangely familiar, but with a twist.
The town of Baile seems to be just a small town with ordinary people until Teagan O’Brien opens an unusual candy shop. Something ancient and buried begins to awaken in the people when they consume his sweets. The path to their salvation depends on three of their human-born children, who are thrust into a future of uncertainty as each one discovers the truth behind the people of Baile and the secrets locked within their own bodies.
What tricks do you use when you hit a writer’s block?
I get my ideas from all sorts of different venues. It could be an article I’ve read or something on the news. Anything that gives me the idea and makes me want to write. Another trick is just writing anything. Describe things around you. My favorite is to describe the objects on my often cluttered desk..
What drew you to write a sci-fi novel?
I wanted to write what hadn’t been done before. There are all kind of fantasy books, but they all contained the elements of the same characters, creatures, and plot. I wanted to write a novel that had originality to it.
What are the challenges and benefits of making your book available on Kindle?
Formatting was probably my biggest challenge, along with deciding on a price. The pricing was also a benefit, because I could set it at a low price – an option I didn’t have with the book editions.
What authors inspire you?
Stephen King, Clive Barker, M.G. Miller. I know Miller personally – he gave me the title “Queen of the Grue” for my knack of writing deliciously gruesome lines.
What a great interview, R.K.! Your advice on overcoming writer’s block nailed it.
Check out Kickshaw Candies for a fascinating story of hidden truths.
