Mysti Parker’s novel has a lot to offer, whether or not you usually read fantasy! I can say this because I rarely pick up a fantasy book. I’ve read a lot of speculative fiction, sci-fi, and experimental fiction, but the allure of fantasy tends to be lost on me. However, I found A Ranger’s Tale captivating.
The novel follows Caliphany Aranea, a high elf who holds onto her taste for adventure in spite of her strict upbringing. Her choice to become a ranger – basically a wandering warrior – is frowned upon by her father. When Caliphany meets her soulmate Galadin, the book hits its stride as an epic fantasy romance.
There are plenty of unexpected twists in A Ranger’s Tale, and I enjoyed being surprised by them! Parker’s descriptions create a vivid world that drew me into the story. Caliphany’s struggle for love is skillfully woven into the fantasy setting. Although this is a fantasy romance, neither genre overpowers the other. Instead, they work in harmony.
The novel starts slowly, but the relationships between these characters really carry the book. There are several pivotal scenes that come to mind when I think about the novel; all of them are focused on character interactions. Caliphany and the other protagonists are not cut-out figures ripped from some other fantasy. They are individuals, with feelings, quirks of speech, and motivations with which we can all identify. If you're looking for an entertaining, heartwarming romance with fantasy elements, this is one book you should definitely seek out!
