1. Listen to some music that doesn't relate to your work. I have a number of songs that put me in the mood to write or were playing as I wrote pivotal scenes. I stay away from music that makes me think about writing when I'm trying to trick myself into slipping past a writer's block. A few favorites? Shakira's Waka Waka, Blink 182's All The Small Things, Lady Gaga's Alejandro... anything upbeat and not too taxing on the old language center.
2. Watch a movie or a TV show. Preferably one that doesn't put much demand on your thinking muscles! I love The Office. It always puts me in a happy mood and is great stress relief when I've been beating myself up about a lack of productivity.
3. Read fashion blogs. Seriously. I love fashion, I love blogs... They just work together! Sometimes I play around on Polyvore, a site that lets you create your own wardrobe using photos from thousands of brands.
4. Play a computer game. Minecraft is truly addictive, and it really helps me recover from the self-induced pressures of writing a novel and a blog.
What do you do when you can't write? I'd love to hear your best tricks for beating writer's block!
